To measure progress towards this goal, various metrics have been developed to gauge the sustainability performance of cloud services. Here are some key metrics to consider:

Energy Efficiency

  • Power usage effectiveness (PUE): This metric calculates the ratio of power consumed by servers and other equipment versus the total power drawn from the grid.
  • Carbon intensity: A measure of CO2 emissions per unit of energy consumed.

Rackspace’s Cloud Sustainability Index

This metric evaluates cloud providers based on their energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and supply chain transparency. A score of 100 represents a best-in-class performance.

The Green Grid’s Data Center Efficiency Index

This benchmark assesses data center performance using metrics like PUE, WUE, and energy density. A higher score indicates greater efficiency.
